It’s been about a week since I’ve started us, ‘T’ included, on Green Smoothies. Both Rajiv and I are trying to kick the morning caffeine and replace it with a much healthier option. They are super healthy, excellent for the immune system and what better way to get ALL the nutrition and fibre from the greens and fruits than consuming it raw? Also, with ‘T’ slowly transitioning to the food we eat, this medley of greens puts to rest my concerns over whether or not he’s getting enough out of his diet.
There are several benefits of consuming green smoothies. Apart from being packed with nutrition, they are said to be a great source of non-dairy calcium, magnesium and Vitamin C and are a huge booster to the immune system too!
So I am only too glad to start him off on a smoothie a day. I’ve started with smaller amounts and shall gradually increase the quantity.
There are a few precautions I’d recommend while starting your LO on a raw smoothie:
- Thoroughly wash the greens and fruits in diluted vinegar and water or potassium permanganate crystals dissolved in water. Be careful while using the crystals. You need only a VERY LITTLE amount. The washing will ensure there is no pesticide residue or bacteria on the food. Read more on washing your veggies with potassium permanganate.
- Start with the easiest combinations. The ones you know will work. I started with spinach and banana in water as a base. One fruit or veg at a time will also help you rule out any possible food allergies.
- Start with smaller quantities first and increase gradually.
