DIY – Kitchen Garden with the Toddler

I find that involving Trilok with ‘hands-on’ toddler activities is a lot more fruitful than trying to make him understand the concept of things like, gardening, cooking or drawing. This I suppose is a universal truth and most mums would agree with me.

I’ve been trying to get him to appreciate nature a little ever since I caught him ruthlessly tearing away my money plant leaves. I think getting him to plant his own has helped a little. At least now if I catch him tear away at a leaf, he will diligently try to ‘stick’ it back in my presence and apologise to the plant! Haha…

Anyway, if you have a couple of hours of sunlight creeping in and a place to keep a tiny pot. This is a good one to start with. We barely get enough sunlight in the balcony except for in December. Though I’ve seen some decent results with just an hour or so of the morning sun. So far we’ve managed to grow onion chives, garlic chives, spinach and now some newly sprung tomato saplings. Farm01

Doing an activity like this with Trilok was extremely engaging for his little toddler hands and mind, and he seemed to appreciate the harvest and really enjoy a simple onion chives and cheese omelette his mum made for him.

What you will need:

  • Shallots, old or ones that are naturally showing signs of sprouting
  • A pot of fresh mud
  • Some sunlight

What needs to be done:

  • Plant the shallots in the pot of moist mud, not too deep
  • Water a little, every alternate day
  • Watch the chives grow until tall and tender
  • Uproot when ready, don’t get too late in doing so because then they will start drying out

Onion chives omelette:

  • One egg
  • Cheese
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Fresh onion chives, finely chopped

Mix it all up and make a super yummy omelette!
